In the early morning light near the moss-covered stones of Angkor Wat, a small monkey named Alba stayed behind while the larger troop moved noisily through the trees. A local photographer sat quietly several feet away, holding a small piece of fruit in an open hand. Alba noticed immediately, but instead of running forward, he stayed frozen beside a root tangled deep into the forest floor.
The larger monkeys circled nearby, restless and confident. Each time Alba considered moving closer, he glanced nervously toward the older males. His hands tightened against his chest while dry leaves shifted beneath him. The photographer stayed still and avoided direct eye contact, almost as if understanding the tiny monkey’s hesitation.
After several long minutes, the forest softened into silence. The larger monkeys wandered farther away, distracted by movement near the temple wall. Alba slowly stepped forward, pausing every few feet. When he finally reached the food, he grabbed it carefully and hurried back beneath the trees, stopping only once to look behind him.
For a brief moment, the entire forest felt calm again.
